West Kalimantan Experiences Indonesia's Worst Air Quality in the Afternoon (Monday, September 4, 2023)

Air quality in West Kalimantan is the worst in Indonesia today. According to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK)'s Air Pollutant Standard Index (ISPU) page on Monday, September 4th, 2023, at 12:00 WIB, the air quality index in West Kalimantan was 141.

According to the KLHK's Directorate of Air Pollution Control, the ISPU is a unitless number used to describe the ambient air quality at a specific location, based on its impact on human health, aesthetics, and other living things.

The ISPU calculation is based on measurements of seven air pollutant parameters: PM10, PM2.5, NO2, SO2, CO, O3, and HC. Measurements of these air pollutant parameters are taken at 72 stations across various regions.

Based on the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 14 of 2020 concerning the Air Pollutant Standard Index, an ISPU in the range of 0-50 indicates good air quality, 51-100 indicates moderate air quality, and 101-200 indicates unhealthy air quality that is harmful to humans, animals, and plants.

Next, very unhealthy air quality (201-300) can increase health risks for sensitive groups. Meanwhile, hazardous air quality (over 300) can seriously harm health and requires immediate action.

Following West Kalimantan, Riau has the second-worst air quality in Indonesia with an index of 116. Sumatera Selatan is third with an index of 114.

This means that the top three provinces have unhealthy air quality.
