Major holidays, such as Eid al-Fitr, are usually marked by the tradition of eating special foods, mainly meat dishes. Examples include chicken opor and rendang.
Meat consumption tends to increase on special occasions. However, outside of major holidays, which country consumes the most meat in the world?
Wisevoter compiled meat consumption data based on the supply distributed to the population in each country. The data includes beef, chicken, and pork. Fish and other seafood are not included.
The results show that Argentina ranks first, supplying 297 kilograms (kg) per capita per day in 2022.
This breaks down to 131 grams of beef per person per day and 121 grams of chicken per person per day.
Second is Israel with 248 kg per capita per day. The estimate is 46 grams of beef per capita per day; 161 grams of chicken per capita per day; and 1 gram of pork per capita per day.
Third is Iceland, with 240 kg per capita per day. This includes 43 grams of beef per capita per day and 82 grams of chicken per capita per day.
Fourth is Mongolia, with a supply of 234 kg per capita per day. Fifth is the United Arab Emirates with a supply of 230 kg per capita per day.
What about Indonesia's position?
Indonesia ranks 156th with a meat supply of 31 kg per capita per day. The estimate is 5 grams of beef per person per day, 22 grams of chicken per person per day, and 1 gram of pork per person per day.

Wisevoter states that India has the lowest meat consumption, supplying only 14 kg per capita per day.
The global average is 93 kilograms. This includes 18 grams of beef per capita per day; 51 grams of chicken per day; and 2 grams of pork per capita per day.
"The type of meat most consumed worldwide is poultry, followed by beef, and lastly pork," Wisevoter wrote in its report.
On the one hand, Wisevoter mentions that meat consumption is considered due to its environmental and health impacts.
According to a 2019 report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), global meat consumption increased by more than 40% from 1990 to 2018. Wisevoter believes the FAO's calculations will increase in the coming years.
