Indonesia's corn production from 1980-2017 shows an upward trend, consistent with the increase in harvested land area during the same period. However, this increased domestic production has not been able to meet domestic needs, resulting in the government occasionally importing corn from abroad.
The Ministry of Agriculture claims that starting this year, corn production will be in surplus, allowing Indonesia to boost exports to several countries, targeting 300,000 tons this year. After exporting to the Philippines, the next export destination for Indonesian corn is Malaysia.
Based on data from the Ministry of Agriculture, national corn production in 2017 reached 27.95 million tons (Aram II), up from 23.58 million tons the previous year. This corn production was the highest compared to previous years, and this year is predicted to grow by 7.34%. The harvested area of corn last year increased by 20.95% to 5.3 million hectares from 4.44 million hectares the previous year. Meanwhile, national corn productivity in 2017 reached 52 quintals/hectare, a decrease of 1.98% from 53.05 quintals/hectare the previous year.
