The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) stated that there is a climate change phenomenon in Indonesia called El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO). ENSO consists of three phases: El Nino, Normal, and La Nina.

This phenomenon is usually followed by a decrease and increase in rainfall above normal levels, which is unfavorable for the agricultural sector, especially for corn and soybean crops.

In line with the BPS survey in 2024, 23.79% of 36,363 corn farming households were affected by climate change.

Meanwhile, 26.12% of 1,138 soybean farming households also reported being affected by climate change. As a result, the average productivity of corn and soybeans has also decreased.

According to BPS, the average productivity of corn not affected by climate change reached 53.69 quintals/hectare (ha), while for those affected, the average productivity was only 46.60 quintals/ha.

"For soybean crops not affected by climate change, the average productivity was 17.03 quintals/ha, and for soybean crops affected by climate change, the productivity was 13.99 quintals/ha," BPS explained in its report.

Based on these findings, BPS stated that sooner or later, climate change will affect the growth of corn and soybean crops in Indonesia, even though many corn and soybean farming households currently feel unaffected.
