Warning! Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Evening (Sunday, April 21, 2024)

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at 5:02 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 10 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 400 meters above the peak or 1,823 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate to thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 19.9 millimeters and a duration of 52 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 21, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 5 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 23.8-33 millimeters and durations of 30-48 seconds. Furthermore, there were 86 tremor events with amplitudes of 3.1-22 millimeters and durations of 20-221 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter or carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and that the residents of Lamatokan and Jontona villages should remain vigilant against potential hazards from lava collapses/landslides and pyroclastic flows from the eastern part of the peak/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 567 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (184 times), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 54 times.
