According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Indonesia exported communication equipment worth a total of US$2.13 billion throughout 2024.
Based on the Indonesian Standard Industrial Classification (KBLI), this communication equipment includes telephones, fax machines, wireless communication devices, mobile phones, transmitting/receiving antennas, television broadcasting equipment, modems, and others.
In 2024, the United States (US) was the largest export market for Indonesian communication equipment, reaching US$920 million, almost half or 43% of total national exports.
Other major markets include Malaysia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, the Philippines, Australia, South Korea, and Hong Kong, with export values as shown in the graph.
However, the performance of Indonesian communication equipment exports is at risk of being disrupted this year, because the US, as the largest market, is implementing trade barriers.
In April 2025, US President Donald Trump implemented a new policy, resulting in Indonesian products exported to the US being subject to a 32% import tariff.
Initially, this tariff was to take effect starting Wednesday (April 9, 2025). However, on Thursday (April 10, 2025), Trump postponed its implementation and applied a basic tariff of 10% for the next 90 days.
Telkom Indonesia, a state-owned telecommunications company, is still assessing the impact of this policy.
"Currently, there is no decision regarding an increase in service prices. We are still conducting a study and waiting for further developments," said Telkom's Vice President of Corporate Communication, Andri Herawan Sasoko, as reported by Katadata.co.id on Thursday (April 10, 2025).
Separately, the Executive Director of the ICT Institute, Heru Sutadi, estimated that the impact of Trump's tariff policy would be felt 3 to 6 months after its implementation.
"This policy will also impact the development of telecommunications and digital technology in Indonesia," said Heru, as reported by Katadata.co.id on Thursday (April 10, 2025).
