A Pelita Air flight was delayed at Juanda Airport, Surabaya, on Wednesday afternoon (December 6, 2023), due to a passenger jokingly mentioning a bomb.
"On flight IP 205, Surabaya-Jakarta route, scheduled for 1:20 PM, a report circulated about a bomb threat on our plane," said Pelita Air Corporate Secretary Agdya P. P. Yogandari in a press release on Wednesday (December 6, 2023).
"Our team and security personnel investigated and found that the bomb threat joke originated from a passenger named Surya Hadi Wijaya. The joke was made while the plane was taxiing to the runway," Agdya said.
Pelita Air personnel who heard the joke then took action according to security protocols.
They conducted a thorough inspection of the aircraft, passengers, baggage, and carry-on items until everything was declared safe.
Pelita Air management stated that, based on Law Number 1 of 2009 concerning Aviation, Article 344, everyone is prohibited from taking unlawful actions that endanger flight safety, including the spread of false information.
Details of criminal penalties related to the dissemination of false information during a flight, based on Law Number 1 of 2009, Article 437, paragraphs 1-3:
(1) Anyone who conveys false information that endangers flight safety as referred to in Article 344 (e) shall be punished with imprisonment for a maximum of one year.
(2) If the crime referred to in paragraph (1) results in an accident or loss of property, the perpetrator shall be punished with imprisonment for a maximum of eight years.
(3) If the crime referred to in paragraph (1) results in the death of a person, the perpetrator shall be punished with imprisonment for a maximum of fifteen years.
Pelita Air management stated that the passenger who made the bomb joke will be processed according to applicable regulations.
