Indonesia's Import Value by Mode of Transportation 2023

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that Indonesia's import value reached US$221.88 billion in 2023. This represents a 6.55% decrease year-on-year (yoy) compared to US$237.44 billion in the previous year.

By mode of transportation, the majority (90.66%) of imports to Indonesia arrived via sea. The value of these seaborne imports amounted to US$201.15 billion, a 6.82% year-on-year (yoy) decrease.

"The dominance of sea transport for imports is closely related to Indonesia's geographical conditions as an archipelago, where islands and countries are interconnected by sea," wrote the BPS in its report.

Furthermore, BPS explained that lower transportation costs also influenced the choice of this mode. Sea transport can also carry larger quantities of goods compared to other modes.

Next, the value of imports via air transport reached US$20.66 billion, down 3.95% (yoy). This mode of transport contributed 3.39% to the total import value last year.

"This mode of transport is the preferred choice for importing lighter goods, even though the cost is relatively higher," wrote the BPS.

In addition, Indonesia also imported goods via pipelines or cables worth US$60.6 million, up 7.96% (yoy).

Imports via post amounted to US$5.4 million, surging 125.32% (yoy), and via land transport reached US$1.4 million, growing by 186.38% (yoy).
