Apple Inc. is reportedly planning to sell its newest smartphone, the iPhone 15, around September 22, 2023, according to Bloomberg. The launch date for the latest generation iPhone will be released a week earlier, on September 12 or 13, 2023.
Amidst the anticipation for the new iPhone, Apple acknowledged the disappointing reality that its smartphone market share has slumped. According to the company's financial report, iPhone sales in Q3 2023 reached only US$39.66 billion. This figure represents a 2.44% year-on-year (YoY) decrease.
Despite this, the iPhone remains Apple's primary revenue contributor, accounting for 48.5% of the company's total revenue in Q3 2023. Regionally, the United States remains the largest market for the American manufacturer, although sales have declined.
"The smartphone market has been declining for the past few quarters in the United States," said CEO Tim Cook, as quoted by Bloomberg on Monday, August 7, 2023.
According to Bloomberg, Apple blames the recent currency weakening. On the other hand, the company admits that US buyers are not spending on its products as they used to.
"Smartphone sales in Apple's home country pale in comparison to China, which Tim Cook highlighted as a key focus this quarter," as quoted from Bloomberg.
Over the past 16 years, Apple's iPhone sales revenue has shown an upward trend.
In its first year, Apple's iPhone revenue was recorded at only US$5 million in Q3 2007. The amount has steadily increased as shown in the chart above.
Over the past 16 years, Apple's iPhone revenue has surged by more than 790,000% in Q3 2023.
The increase in iPhone revenue is clearly visible when Apple launched major overhauls of its smartphone features. This occurred with the launch of the iPhone 6 in 2014, the iPhone X in 2017, and the iPhone 12 in 2020.
"New features usually sell themselves," said Bloomberg. For example, when Apple offered larger screens, an updated design without a home button for the X model, and 5G connectivity for the 12, 13, and 14 generations.
