According to the 2023 Work Relationship Index report from Hewlett-Packard (HP), across 12 surveyed countries, only 27% of employees on average feel they have a healthy relationship with their work.
HP measured the quality of this worker relationship through six key indicators: job satisfaction, professional development, leadership quality in the office, collaborative decision-making (people-centricity) in the workplace, supportive work tools, and workspace flexibility.
Based on these assessment indicators, India had the highest proportion of employees with a healthy relationship with their work, at 50%. This was the highest figure among the 12 surveyed countries.
Indonesia followed in second place, with 38% of respondents reporting a similarly healthy relationship.
Across all surveyed countries, the proportion of employees with a healthy relationship with their work was generally low, below 50%. This was also found in high-income countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, and Japan, as shown in the graph.
"These low figures are a warning. A large number of unhealthy work relationships negatively impact employees and are detrimental to businesses," stated the HP research team in their report.
"When work negatively impacts employees emotionally and physically, employees tend to eat poorly, exercise less, have difficulty sleeping at night, gain weight, feel a sense of failure, feel isolated, and more," they continued.
HP's survey involved 16,828 respondents across 12 countries. In Indonesia, 1,401 respondents participated.
Respondents were from the ranks of knowledge workers, decision-making employees in the information technology field, and business leaders. The online survey was conducted between June 9th and July 10th, 2023.
