YouTube and BitTorrent Compete in Asia

In the Asia Pacific region, the highest internet usage is for entertainment and content sharing. The 2016 "Global Internet Phenomena" report stated that internet traffic to support these activities reached 65 percent. The most popular applications are YouTube and BitTorrent.

According to a report by Sandvine, a leading broadband network solutions provider in Asia, YouTube downstream traffic reached 29 percent, while BitTorrent accounted for 19.2 percent. Other popular applications include web browsers and Facebook. The high usage of these applications is linked to the unique characteristics of Asia Pacific users, who are highly sharing-oriented.

Besides downstream traffic, Sandvine also measured the top most popular applications for upstream traffic, namely peer-to-peer applications such as BitTorrent, QVoD, Thunder, Dropbox, and PPStream.
