The English Premier League table after week eight of the 2023-2024 season has changed, particularly after Arsenal's 1-0 victory over Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, October 8, 2023.
The match between these two top clubs was fiercely contested. Both the Gunners and the Citizens found it difficult to break through each other's defenses due to the skill of both teams' backlines in repelling attacks.
At the start of the second half, Mikel Arteta made substitutions, bringing on Gabriel Martinelli for Leandro Trossard. The Brazilian winger immediately energized Arsenal's attack from the left flank with his speed and skillful dribbling against the strong defense of Kyle Walker and his teammates.
In addition to Martinelli, Arteta also introduced Kai Havertz, Thomas Partey, and Takehiro Tomiyasu in the second half, replacing Eddie Nketiah, Jorginho, and Oleksandr Zinchenko to increase the London Gunners' attacking power and creativity.
Arteta's adjustments paid off, leading to Man City conceding a goal in the 86th minute. The goal originated from a long pass from Thomas Partey to Takehiro Tomiyasu, who won an aerial duel against Kyle Walker. The ball then went to Kai Havertz. The former Chelsea player then passed to Martinelli, who was running from the left flank, followed by a powerful shot.
Martinelli's powerful shot hit Nathan Ake's face, deflecting the ball into the near post. Ederson Moraes, who had already moved to his left, was caught off guard. As a result, Arsenal led 1-0 until the end of the match, securing their first win against Man City in the Premier League since 2015.
Thanks to this victory, Arsenal climbed one position to second place in the Premier League table with 20 points, overtaking Man City.
Arsenal has the same number of points as Tottenham Hotspur, but fewer goals scored. Therefore, The Lilywhites currently top the table.
Meanwhile, Man City dropped to third place with 18 points. Pep Guardiola's team is followed by Liverpool with 17 points. Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion are next with 16 points each.
West Ham United, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, and Manchester United occupy the next positions in the top 10.
In the relegation zone, Sheffield United are rooted to the bottom of the table after a 1-3 defeat to Fulham. This defeat is their fourth consecutive loss in the Premier League this season.
