Political Charter: 43.3% of Citizens Don't Trust Government's Covid-19 Data

A Charta Politika survey shows that 43.3% of Indonesians distrust the government's data on COVID-19 virus handling. This breaks down to 37.1% who are somewhat distrustful and 6.2% who are completely distrustful.

However, a larger percentage of Indonesians, 53.1%, do trust the government's data on coronavirus handling. Specifically, 48.6% of respondents stated they are somewhat trusting and 4.5% stated they are very trusting.

Charta Politika Executive Director Yunarto Wijaya stated that the high level of public distrust stems from the government's lack of transparency regarding coronavirus data. In addition, the government does have a tangled web of data problems.

The most recent problem concerns data on coronavirus-related deaths. As a result, the government has decided not to use this data as an indicator for assessing pandemic management.

Ministry of Health Expert Staff Panji Fortuna explained that the reporting of death cases by regions is not real-time. The reported data is an accumulation from previous months. This biased data leads to inaccurate assessments of the PPKM level in a given region.

Charta Politika conducted a survey of 1,200 respondents across Indonesia from July 12-20, 2021. The survey used a multistage random sampling method with a margin of error of more than 2.83% and a 95% confidence level.
