The Number of Seats Won by the National Mandate Party (PPP) in the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Has Steadily Declined Since the 1999 General Election.

The vote share of the United Development Party (PPP) has been steadily declining since the 1999 General Election. Consequently, the PPP must form a coalition with other political parties to nominate a presidential candidate for the 2024 General Election.

The PPP is a political party formed from the merger of four religious parties during the New Order era in 1973. These four parties were the Nahdlatul Ulama Party (NU), the Persatuan Tarbiyah Islamiyah Party, the Syarikat Islam Indonesia Party, and the Muslimin Indonesia Party.

In the first post-reform general election in 1999, the PPP secured 11.31 million votes (10.72% of the national valid votes). This result enabled the PPP to place 58 representatives in the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) for the 1999-2004 period, representing 12.55% of the total DPR RI seats.

However, in subsequent elections, the vote share of this Ka'bah-symbolized party continued to shrink. In the 2019 General Election, the PPP only received 6.32 million votes (4.52% of the national valid votes), securing only 19 seats (3.3%) in the DPR RI for the 2019-2024 period.

Based on its vote share and the number of DPR RI seats obtained, the party chaired by Suharso Monoarfa does not currently meet the presidential candidacy requirements for the 2024 Presidential Election.

According to Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections, Article 222, a political party or coalition of political parties intending to nominate a presidential and vice-presidential candidate must meet one of the candidacy requirements (Presidential Threshold). This requirement is a minimum of 25% of the total national valid votes or 20% of the total DPR RI seats.

The PPP, along with the Golkar Party and the National Mandate Party (PAN), declared their cooperation by forming a coalition named the United Indonesia Coalition (KIB) on May 12, 2022.
