The PKB and Democratic Party Coalition Has Not Yet Met the Presidential Threshold

As the General Election (Pemilu) approaches, political elites are starting to actively form coalitions to nominate presidential candidates for the 2024 Election.

Following the United Indonesia Coalition (KIB), the National Awakening Party (PKB) has also begun exploring coalition formation by engaging with other parties. The political party led by Muhaimin Iskandar (Cak Imin) is eyeing the Democratic Party to form a coalition.

Article 222 of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning the General Election mandates that political parties or coalitions of political parties must meet the threshold requirement (Presidential Threshold) of obtaining 25% of the total national valid votes or 20% of the total seats in the House of Representatives (DPR RI) in order to nominate a candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election.

In the 2019 General Election, PKB obtained 9.69% and the Democratic Party obtained 7.77% of the national valid votes. The combined vote share of the two parties is only 17.46%, thus failing to meet the 25% vote threshold requirement.

Based on the results of the 2019 General Election, PKB only obtained 58 (10.09%) of the total seats in the DPR RI, and the Democratic Party obtained 54 (9.39%) seats. Therefore, the two parties have a total of 112 (19.48%) seats in the DPR, still failing to meet the requirement to nominate a candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election because they do not meet the threshold requirement, either based on vote share or the number of seats in the DPR.
