Starting today (8/1/2026), Indonesia has been appointed as President of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council for the 2026 period.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), the position will be held by the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the UN in Geneva, Ambassador Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro.
"Indonesia's election as President of the UN Human Rights Council strengthens Indonesia's human rights diplomacy profile, while also reaffirming Indonesia's leadership at the international level," the MoFA stated in a press release (23/12/2025).
"The broad support from Asia-Pacific countries for Indonesia is driven by Indonesia's track record as a bridge builder on human rights issues, its position as an independent developing country not affiliated with the interests of any particular bloc, and Indonesia's consistent commitment to championing humanitarian issues in various parts of the world," the MoFA said.
Despite holding this position, Indonesia's human rights enforcement performance is not prominent on a global scale.
This is evident from the V-Dem Institute's Human Rights Index, an independent research institution from Sweden, whose data is processed by Our World in Data.
The V-Dem Institute's Human Rights Index measures human rights enforcement performance based on the level of state violence, political freedom, freedom of religion, expression, association, and other civil liberty indicators in each country.
The results are processed into a score on a 0-1 point scale. The higher the score, the better the human rights enforcement in a country is assumed to be.
In 2024, Indonesia obtained a score of 0.7 points. This score places Indonesia 104th out of 174 countries surveyed.
Countries with high scores are generally located in the European region.
Here is a list of the top 10 countries with the best human rights enforcement performance in 2024, according to the V-Dem Institute's Human Rights Index:
