According to a survey by Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC), a majority of Indonesians are currently afraid to discuss politics.

37.7% of respondents reported frequently feeling this fear, and 12.9% said they are always afraid. Combined, this represents 50.6% of respondents.

SMRC conducted a similar survey in 2014. At that time, only 22% of respondents felt that people were often or always afraid to discuss politics.

"Previously, those afraid to discuss politics were never a majority. But now, at the end of President Jokowi's administration, those afraid to discuss politics constitute a majority," said SMRC founder Saiful Mujani in a video titled "Otokratisasi di 10 Tahun Presiden Jokowi" (Authoritarianism in 10 Years of President Jokowi's Administration) uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.

"This indicates that authoritarianization is underway in Indonesia," Saiful stated.

The SMRC survey involved 994 respondents across Indonesia, selected using multistage random sampling.

Data collection was conducted from October 4-11, 2024, through face-to-face interviews. The survey's margin of error is approximately 3.2% at a 95% confidence level.
