An Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI) poll shows that Bobby Nasution, the Mayor of Medan and son-in-law of President Joko Widodo, holds the top spot in the "top of mind" ranking for prospective gubernatorial candidates (bacagub) in North Sumatra, with a 34.2% electability rate.

"Top of mind" refers to the first name that comes to respondents' minds when asked a question. The question in this survey was: "Who would you choose as the Governor of North Sumatra if the direct election were held today?"

Former North Sumatra Governor Edy Rahmayadi came in second with an electability rate of 15.1%, more than twice less than Bobby's proportion.

Musa Rajekshah (Ijeck) is in third place with 4%, followed by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) with 3.3%.

Outside the top four, electability rates are less than 2%, as shown in the graph. 34.7% of respondents answered "don't know" or "secret."

Both Bobby and Edy consistently held the top two spots in open simulations with 23 names down to two names. Even in a head-to-head simulation with two names, Bobby prevailed with 61.3% and Edy with 30.6%.

"The narrowing down shows the same thing: the competition seems to be dominated by two names, Bobby Afif Nasution and Edy Rahmayadi; other names are still below 10%," said LSI Executive Director Djayadi Hanan while presenting the survey results online on Sunday (28/7/2024), as reported by Antaranews.

The survey involved 800 respondents in North Sumatra, aged 17 and above or married. Respondents were selected using multistage random sampling.

Data collection was conducted from July 7-17, 2024, through face-to-face interviews. The survey's margin of error is approximately 3.5% at a 95% confidence level.
