Bawaslu Handles 1,532 Alleged Violations in the 2020 Simultaneous Regional Elections

The Indonesian Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) recorded 1,532 alleged cases of administrative violations in the simultaneous 2020 Regional Head Elections (Pilkada). The most numerous alleged administrative violations occurred during the campaign period, totaling 797 cases.

Besides the campaign period, administrative violations also occurred during the voter data updating phase (287 cases), the formation of the District Election Committee (PPK), the Polling Station Working Committee (PPS), and the Voting Committee (KPPS) (203 cases).

Furthermore, alleged administrative violations also occurred during the nomination phase (139 cases) and the voting phase (39 cases).

Meanwhile, there were 15 alleged administrative violations during the vote counting and tabulation phase. No alleged administrative violations were reported during the quiet period and the announcement of election results. Additionally, there were 8 alleged administrative violations that did not fall under any specific phase.

Based on the type of administrative violation, the most frequent cases involved the illegal installation of candidate banners/billboards, violating campaign paraphernalia regulations (437 cases). This was followed by violations by Voter Data Updaters (PPDP) who failed to conduct the Voter List Compilation (Coklit) according to regulations (170 cases).

Based on province, the most administrative violations occurred in East Java (388 cases), followed by Lampung (258 cases), Central Java (138 cases), and South Sulawesi (134 cases). Provinces with the fewest administrative violations were Papua (2 cases), Bangka Belitung (3 cases), North Maluku (6 cases), and Yogyakarta (8 cases).

As the authorized body for handling alleged administrative violations, Bawaslu utilizes the administrative violation handling mechanism stipulated in the Regional Elections Law and Bawaslu Regulation Number 8 of 2020 concerning the Handling of Violations in the Election of Governors and Deputy Governors, Regents and Deputy Regents, and Mayors and Deputy Mayors.
