Indicator: Many People Choose Prabowo Because of His Military Background

Preliminary real count data from the General Election Commission (KPU) shows the Prabowo-Gibran presidential-vice presidential ticket leading in the 2024 Presidential Election.

According to a post-election survey (exit poll) by Indikator Politik Indonesia, Prabowo's strong military background is his main appeal.

Of all respondents who voted for Prabowo-Gibran, the majority, or 20.4%, chose the pair because of their firm and authoritative stance and military background.

"It happens that of the presidential and vice-presidential candidates, only Mr. Prabowo has a military background. Therefore, this is very prominent," said Indikator's Senior Researcher Hendro Prasetyo in an online presentation of his survey on Wednesday (21/2/2024).

Furthermore, 14.6% of respondents chose Prabowo-Gibran due to their attention to the people, and 12.7% believed they would continue President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi's) programs.

"This (Prabowo-Gibran) benefits from the narrative of continuing (Jokowi's performance)," said Hendro.

Then, 9.9% of respondents chose Prabowo-Gibran because of their work program or vision-mission. One of the most frequently voiced work programs is free lunch and milk for children.

There were also respondents who voted for the pair because of their experience (7.6%), trustworthiness (6.5%), proven track record (4.3%), and desire for change (4%).

In addition, some respondents supported the pair because Gibran is a young person and Jokowi's son (2.6%), they liked the presidential and vice-presidential candidates (2.2%), and they were perceived as clean from corruption (2.2%).

This Indikator post-election survey involved 2,975 respondents selected using stratified two-stage random sampling from 3,000 polling stations (TPS) in each electoral district.

The survey was conducted on February 14, 2024, through face-to-face interviews, with a margin of error of approximately 1.8% and a 95% confidence level.
