SMRC: Younger Respondents Increasingly Believe in the PKI's Resurgence

The younger the respondent, the higher their belief in the resurgence of communism in Indonesia. A survey by Saiful Mujani Research & Consulting (SMRC) shows that those aged 21 and under are most likely to believe in the resurgence of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI). 25 percent of respondents in the ?21 age group agreed that there is a PKI resurgence.

For the 22-25 age group, 17 percent agreed on the PKI resurgence; for the 26-40 age group, 13 percent; for the 41-55 age group, 12 percent; and for those over 55, only 9 percent.

This national SMRC survey, conducted from September 3-10, 2017, used multistage random sampling of 1,220 Indonesian citizens aged 17 or older, or married. 1,057 respondents (87 percent) were successfully and validly interviewed. The average margin of error is +/- 3.1 percent with a 95 percent confidence level.
