Coffee Shop Survey: 61% of Voters Want a Non-Javanese Presidential Candidate; Why?

A KedaiKopi survey shows that 61% of respondents stated they would prefer a presidential candidate from a non-Javanese ethnic background if given the option. The belief that all ethnic groups are equal is the primary reason behind this choice.

Most respondents (43.1%) stated their preference for a non-Javanese president because they believe all ethnic groups are equal. Furthermore, 26.9% responded that all ethnic groups should have an equal opportunity.

Another 12.1% of respondents cited a desire for change, and 1.9% stated that a presidential candidate from a non-Javanese ethnic background is equally qualified. Of the seven presidents who have served, only B.J. Habibie was not of Javanese descent.

Additionally, 1.6% of respondents felt that Javanese presidents lacked decisiveness, and 1.5% indicated that the candidate's religion was the most important factor.

KedaiKOPI conducted the survey from November 16-24, 2021, with 1,200 respondents aged 17-65, distributed across all provinces. The survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews, with a sampling error of approximately 2.83 percent.
