Indonesia's benchmark coal price (HBA) stood at US$281.48/ton in December 2022. This price is 8.67% lower than the HBA in November 2022.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), this price decrease is influenced by policies from India and China.

"Furthermore, China's Zero-Covid policy has impacted the decrease in coal demand due to lower electricity demand resulting from restrictions on factory activities," he continued.

Previously, the World Bank projected that the price of fossil energy commodities, including coal, would continue to weaken until 2024, in line with the slowing global economy.

"After surging 60% in 2022, energy prices are projected to fall 11% in 2023 and a further 12% in 2024," said the World Bank in its October 2022 Commodity Markets Outlook report.

"This outlook is primarily driven by slowing global economic growth, weakening natural gas demand as households and industries reduce consumption, and supply responses, particularly for coal," it continued.

Despite weakening, coal prices over the next two years are predicted to remain at least 50% above the pre-pandemic average.

"High energy prices will persist and impact inflation, such as high transportation costs and electricity tariffs for businesses," said the World Bank.
