According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Indonesia exported US$4.69 billion worth of athletic footwear in 2024.
The United States (US) was the largest market, with a value of US$1.69 billion, equivalent to 36% of total national exports.
Other major export markets include Belgium, the Netherlands, China, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Germany, South Korea, and Australia, with export values as shown in the graph.
However, Indonesia's athletic footwear exports to the US are at risk this year.
In April 2025, US President Donald Trump implemented a new policy imposing a 32% import tariff on Indonesian products exported to the US.
Initially, this tariff was to take effect on Wednesday, April 9, 2025. However, on Thursday, April 10, 2025, Trump postponed its implementation and applied a 10% basic tariff for the next 90 days.
According to Eddy Widjanarko, Chairman of the Indonesian Footwear Association (Aprisindo), Trump's tariff policy threatens Indonesia's footwear industry.
"This means that purchasing orders (POs) will decrease in the next six months, which could lead to reduced production and possibly layoffs," said Eddy, as reported by Harian Kompas on Thursday, April 3, 2025.
He also believes that the high tariff policy for Indonesia could cause US buyers to switch to countries with lower tariffs, such as India.
