Indonesia's Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) Detects 343 Hotspots Across Indonesia, Most in East Kalimantan (Wednesday, January 31, 2024)

Based on the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry's (KLHK) SiPongi forest and land fire monitoring system, 24-hour monitoring shows 343 hotspots detected in Indonesia. This is an increase of 38 hotspots compared to the previous period.

This data is the result of satellite imagery from Terra/Aqua, SNPP, and NOAA accessed on Wednesday (31/1/2024) at 08.52 WIB. Of the 343 hotspots detected, 10 have a high confidence level, 322 are medium, and 11 are low.

The hotspot confidence level is divided into 3 scales: low (0-29), medium (30-79), and high (80-100). The higher the confidence level, the higher the likelihood of forest and land fires in a particular area.

The highest number of hotspots was detected in East Kalimantan with 117. Central Sulawesi is second with 27 hotspots, followed by North Maluku with 26.

Twenty hotspots were detected in East Nusa Tenggara, followed by South Sulawesi with 17, and Southeast Sulawesi and North Kalimantan with 17 and 14 respectively.

Hotspots are coordinate points of an area with a higher surface temperature than its surroundings, and not the number of forest and land fire incidents.

However, a large number of clustered hotspots in an area indicates forest and land fires. This means that hotspot data from remote sensing satellites remains the most effective method for monitoring forest and land fires over large areas.
