Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Morning (Monday, May 6, 2024)

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Monday, May 6, 2024, at 08:18 WITA (West Indonesia Time). This marks the third eruption in the past week.

According to information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column reached a height of 300 meters above the summit (1,723 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with moderate intensity heading west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 16 millimeters and a duration of 224 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA on May 6, 2024, showed 111 instances of tremor with amplitudes of 2.5-33.2 millimeters and durations of 29-201 seconds. There were also two distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.9-6.5 millimeters (S-P not observed) and durations of 81-215 seconds.

PVMBG advises residents around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, to avoid entering and refrain from any activity within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity. Residents of Lamatokan and Jontona villages should remain vigilant against potential hazards from lava flows/landslides and pyroclastic flows from the eastern part of the summit/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

In 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 634 volcanic eruptions/eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java experienced the most eruptions (214), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 56 times.
