Mount Marapi Erupts Again in the Early Hours of Today (Thursday, April 11, 2024)

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at 01:30 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). This is the second eruption in the last week.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the eruption was not visually observed. The eruption of Mount Marapi was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Siaga/Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 11, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIB, showed one puffing event with an amplitude of 3.8 millimeters and a duration of 15.2 seconds.

Furthermore, there was one local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 7.8 millimeters, an S-P time of 3.3 seconds, and a duration of 17.5 seconds; and two distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.5-3 millimeters, S-P times of 20-21 seconds, and durations of 56-67 seconds.

The PVMBG urges the public around Mount Marapi, as well as climbers, visitors, and tourists, to not enter and refrain from any activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 511 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (164 times), while Mount Marapi erupted 162 times.
