Indonesia's Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) Detects 119 Hotspots Across Indonesia, Most in East Kalimantan (Monday, December 4, 2023)

Based on the forest and land fire monitoring system SiPongi of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), 24-hour monitoring shows 119 hotspots detected in Indonesia. This number is a decrease of 199 hotspots compared to the previous period.

This data is the result of satellite imagery from Terra/Aqua, SNPP, and NOAA accessed on Monday (4/12/2023) at 13.41 WIB. Of the 119 hotspots detected, 2 have a high confidence level, 111 are medium, and 6 are low.

The hotspot confidence level is divided into 3 scales: low (0-29), medium (30-79), and high (80-100). The higher the confidence level, the higher the likelihood of a forest and land fire in that area.

East Kalimantan has the highest number of detected hotspots with 19. North Maluku is second with 17, followed by Southeast Sulawesi with 16.

South Sulawesi has 15 detected hotspots, East Java 14, and Central Sulawesi and Central Java have 9 and 7 respectively.

Hotspots are coordinate points of an area with a higher surface temperature than its surroundings, and do not represent the number of forest and land fire incidents.

However, a large number of hotspots clustered in one area indicates forest and land fires. This means that hotspot data from remote sensing satellites remains the most effective method for monitoring forest and land fires over large areas.
