Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again Today, Volcanic Ash Reaches 600 Meters

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at 3:05 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 7 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 600 meters above the peak or 2,023 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 23.7 millimeters and a duration of 117 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 17, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 10 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11.5-26.1 millimeters and durations of 29-139 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 79 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 2.9-33.4 millimeters and durations of 47-345 seconds, and 2 non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-5.5 millimeters and durations of 412-458 seconds.

PVMBG urges residents around Mount Ili Lewotolok and visitors/climbers/tourists to avoid entering and not carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and residents of Lamatokan and Jontona villages should always be aware of the potential dangers of lava collapses/landslides and pyroclastic flows from the east side of the peak/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 541 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (174 eruptions), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 51 times.
