Mount Marapi Erupts Wednesday Afternoon, Status Raised to Alert

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at 11:14 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 15 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 15.4 millimeters and a duration of 138 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity from 00:00 to 06:00 WIB on March 6, 2024, showed 11 instances of tremor with amplitudes of 2.7-7.7 millimeters and durations of 62-296 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 hybrid/multiple-phase earthquake with an amplitude of 7 millimeters, an S-P time of 2 seconds, and a duration of 18 seconds; and 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 5.5 millimeters, an S-P time of 2.4 seconds, and a duration of 20 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Marapi, as well as climbers/visitors/tourists, to not enter and not carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 373 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra has experienced the most eruptions, with 126 recorded.
