Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Morning (Wednesday, April 17, 2024)

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at 09:15 WITA (West Indonesia Time). In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 5 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 400 meters above the peak (1,823 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 16.7 millimeters and a duration of 41 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 17, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA showed 12 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 19.6-29.1 millimeters and durations of 27-83 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 88 tremor events with amplitudes of 2.3-21 millimeters and durations of 25-99 seconds, as well as 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 4.3 millimeters and a duration of 80 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter or carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and that the residents of Lamatokan and Jontona villages should remain vigilant against the potential dangers of lava flows/landslides and pyroclastic flows from the eastern part of the peak/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 538 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (174 eruptions), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 49 times.
