Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Morning, Eruption Height Approximately 500 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at 08.05 WITA (West Indonesia Time). This marks the third eruption in the past week.

According to information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash plume reached a height of 500 meters above the summit, or 2,084 meters above sea level.

The ash plume was observed to be white to gray in color, with moderate to thick intensity towards the north. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 4.4 millimeters and a duration of 88 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity from 00.00 to 23.59 WITA on April 11, 2024, showed two eruption quakes with amplitudes of 4.4-5.1 millimeters and durations of 100-138 seconds.

Furthermore, there were four tremor quakes with amplitudes of 1.4-2.9 millimeters and durations of 20-37 seconds, and one harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 2.2 millimeters and a duration of 23 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists to refrain from any activity within a 2-kilometer radius of the eruption center and within a 3-kilometer sectoral area to the northeast and a 5-kilometer sectoral area to the east-northeast.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 513 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java experienced the most eruptions (165 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 67 times.
