Seven out of ten Indonesian Generation Z (Gen Z) spend their money on snacks and treats. This aligns with the results of a survey conducted by the research agency Populix in April 2024.
Based on their spending patterns, 69% of Gen Z respondents spend the most on food.
The next largest expense is beauty products, chosen by 14% of respondents. This is followed by transportation, selected by 9% of respondents.
Finally, entertainment accounts for 5% of respondents' spending, and holidays for 3%.
This survey involved 875 Indonesian Gen Z respondents and was conducted online via PopPoll. Data was collected from April 19-30, 2024.
Gen Z and Hedonism
According to *The Guardian*, Gen Z were born between 1997 and 2012. They are now the largest generation in the world, with annual purchasing power of US$100 billion globally.
*The Guardian* even suggests that Gen Z will constitute 27% of the global workforce by 2025 as they take over the world's economy from Millennials (born 1981-1996), Generation X (1965-1981), Baby Boomers (1946-1964), and the Silent Generation (1925-1945).
Communications consultant BCW Global suggests that the perception of Gen Z individuals is potentially exacerbated by the rise of social media.
“If you look at the values [of Gen Z] achieving something with power, hedonism, stimulation, that’s a very interesting thing because usually, people aren’t so comfortable saying that they have those values,” said Lisa Story, Chief Strategist at BCW Global, on June 7, 2023.
According to Lisa, the label of hedonism applied to Gen Z might be relative and depends on the environment. In the UK, for example, many young people are avoiding alcohol consumption.
"So, to be hedonistic, might be, for example, exercising and meeting friends for snacks or juice afterwards," said Lisa.
