Electricity generation energy mix is the composition of various energy sources used to generate electricity.
This indicates the extent of coal, natural gas, oil-based fuels, also new and renewable energy contributions to electricity production in a region.
Over the last decade, Indonesia's electricity generation energy mix has been dominated by fossil fuels, particularly coal.
This is recorded in the latest Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) document, published by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in June 2025.
The proportion of coal in the national electricity generation energy mix also increased during the 2015-2024 period.
In 2015, 56.1% of all electricity produced in Indonesia came from coal-based primary energy generation. By 2024, this share rose to 66.8%.
During the same period, the share of natural gas and oil-based fuels decreased, while the share of new and renewable energy increased, although its role remains insignificant.
