The Indonesian government subsidizes 3-kilogram liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, making them affordable.
"The actual price of a 3-kilogram LPG cylinder is Rp42,750, but the price to the public is Rp12,750," said Deputy Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara at last month's (January 7, 2025) APBN Kita press conference.
LPG cylinders of 5.5 kilograms and above are not subsidized and are sold at the normal market price. However, consumers of this type of LPG appear to be very few.
According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), in 2024 only about 8% — precisely 7.99% — of Indonesian households owned non-subsidized LPG cylinders.
The proportion is even smaller than households owning other "expensive goods," such as a flat-screen television of at least 30 inches, at least 10 grams of gold, a car, and an air conditioner (AC), as shown in the graph.
