Demand for Renewable Energy Integration is Poised for Significant Growth

The multinational oil and gas company, Total, predicts a decline in future demand for fossil fuels. Conversely, demand for renewable energy is expected to increase and become integrated.

Total divides its energy demand predictions into two scenarios: "momentum" and "rupture." In the "momentum" scenario, low-carbon agreements are only considered in Europe. Actions outside Europe are based on individual country targets and guided by the Paris Agreement. Conversely, "rupture" is a plan that assumes all countries are committed to net-zero carbon emissions, supported by public policy. Carbon reduction efforts are far more extensive under this scenario, aiming for a global temperature increase of only 1.5 degrees Celsius.

In the "momentum" scenario, Total predicts that gas demand will dominate in 2050, reaching 30.6%. Gas-fired power plants will form the basis of stability and flexibility for renewable energy integration. Renewable energy demand is projected at 27.8%. Conversely, the "rupture" scenario shows a majority demand for renewable energy at 53.1%, while gas demand is only 28.1%.
