**Microsoft's Mass Layoffs Amidst Improved Performance**
Recently, Microsoft announced plans to cut 3% of its workforce, or 6,000 employees, across all levels, teams, and regions. Management claims this is a necessary part of company restructuring.
"We are continuing to implement the necessary organizational changes to best position the company for success in a dynamic market," a Microsoft spokesperson stated in a statement to CNBC, as quoted by Katadata on Wednesday (May 14, 2025).
The company reported better-than-expected financial performance, with a net profit of US$25.8 billion (approximately Rp428 trillion) in Q1 2025. Microsoft had 228,000 employees worldwide at the end of June.
On Tuesday (May 13, 2025), the company reduced its workforce associated with its Redmond headquarters by 1,985 people, including 1,510 in-office employees.
In total, this is likely Microsoft's largest layoff wave since the 10,000-person reduction in 2023. In January, the company announced a smaller round of performance-based layoffs. However, the spokesperson stated that the latest layoffs are not performance-related.
According to the spokesperson, one goal of the layoffs is to reduce management layers. Amazon took a similar approach in January, laying off employees after identifying "unnecessary layers" in its organization.
