Medan City's 2023 current price Gross Domestic Regional Product (PDRB) was recorded at Rp303.31 trillion. This represents a 5.04% growth compared to the previous year's Rp280.16 trillion.
Compared to the COVID-19 pandemic period in 2020, the region's economic growth is significantly higher. At the end of 2020, post-COVID, growth was recorded at a decrease of 1.98%.
According to BPS (Statistics Indonesia) publications, with a total population of 2.53 million, the per capita PDRB in this region was recorded at Rp122.59 million/capita/year. Nationally, this ranks 51st.
Of the 17 sectors driving the region's economy, the wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles sector is the leading contributor.
The wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles sector in Medan City is the mainstay sector, contributing the largest share to the 2023 PDRB with a value of Rp80.79 billion. This represents a 5.28% growth compared to the previous year's Rp73.54 billion.
The construction sector grew by 4.41% to Rp56.4 billion, and the manufacturing sector grew by 2.66% to Rp42.68 billion.
Finally, rounding out the top five sectors contributing to Medan City's PDRB are transportation and warehousing, with a value of Rp19.04 billion. According to BPS, this sector achieved an 11.16% growth over the previous year's Rp16.45 billion.

In terms of distribution, the main sector contributing the largest growth to Medan City's PDRB is wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, with a contribution of 26.51%. Other sectors in the top five include construction, manufacturing, information and communication, and real estate.
The sectors with the smallest distribution are other services, agriculture, forestry and fisheries, water supply, waste management, waste and recycling, electricity and gas supply, and mining and quarrying.
