Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted again in the early hours of this morning, with volcanic ash reaching a height of approximately 700 meters.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at 04.10 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 15 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 700 meters above the peak (2,284 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 2.96 millimeters and a duration of 450 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on September 12, 2024, from 18.00 to 23.59 WITA showed 1 shallow volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 2.96 millimeters and a duration of 13 seconds.

Then, 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 19.24 millimeters, s-p 1.15 seconds, and a duration of 20 seconds, and 3 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.48-4.44 millimeters, s-p 15.8-18.77 seconds, and durations of 43-153 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,660 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,484 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 637 times.
