Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Saturday, January 3, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Saturday (3/1/2026) at 2:03 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 24 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

The eruption's visuals were not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 21 millimeters and a duration of 111 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on January 3, 2026, from 06:00-12:00 WIB showed 35 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 11-23 millimeters and durations of 63-120 seconds.

Subsequently, there were 8 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-8 millimeters and durations of 36-59 seconds, and 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 25 millimeters S-P 31 seconds and a duration of 185 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, the public is advised not to conduct activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks (river borders) along Besuk Kobokan, as there is a potential for hot ash clouds and lava flows to extend up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 42 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has erupted the most, with 24 occurrences.
