Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Afternoon, Volcanic Ash Plume Height Around 400 Meters

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday (August 3, 2025) at 2:00 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 8 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached 400 meters above the peak or 1,823 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 13.6 millimeters and a duration of 45 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcanic activity report, Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on August 3, 2025, from 06:00-12:00 WITA showed 17 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 5.2-18.3 millimeters and earthquake durations of 33-58 seconds.

Furthermore, 38 times of emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.6-5.8 millimeters and earthquake durations of 26-37 seconds, and 1 time of deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 3.6 millimeters s-p 1 second and an earthquake duration of 12 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok as well as visitors/climbers/tourists not to enter and not to engage in activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, to be aware of the potential hazards from lava falls/landslides and pyroclastic flows from the South and Southeast, West, and Northeast sectors of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,441 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java erupted the most (2,182 times) while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 205 times.
