Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning (Monday, August 19, 2024)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday (August 19, 2024) at 10:09 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 4 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 2,000 meters above the peak or 3,325 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 122 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on August 19, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WIT, showed 17 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 8-28 millimeters and durations of 51-102 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 23 tremor events with amplitudes of 3.5-9 millimeters and durations of 20-42 seconds, and 4 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-28 millimeters and durations of 31-77 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,910 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku has erupted the most, with 1,085 eruptions.
