Israel's years-long aggression against Palestine has resulted in numerous casualties and injuries. Most recently, Israel launched an attack on Palestine starting Sunday, October 8, 2023, killing over 400 people, claiming it was in retaliation for attacks by Hamas.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA) has compiled data on injuries suffered by Palestinians during Israeli attacks. From 2008 to September 2023, the accumulated number of injuries reached 152,560.
Years after 2013 saw a significantly higher number of injuries.
The highest number of Palestinian injuries occurred in 2018, reaching 31,259. This was followed by 2021 with 19,183 injuries and 2014 with 17,533 injuries. 2014 also recorded the highest number of Palestinian fatalities at 2,329.
As of September 21, 2023, Palestinian injuries reached 8,508. This figure does not include casualties from the new Israeli attacks that began on October 8, 2023.
Injuries were predominantly among males (83,723), boys (29,618), females (8,935), girls (2,653), and others/unidentified (27,590).
The most common cause of injury was tear gas, affecting 67,713 Palestinians. This was followed by rubber bullets (23,766 injuries), live ammunition (17,578 injuries), and physical violence (5,173 injuries).
In comparison, the number of Israeli casualties is significantly lower. UN-OCHA data shows that 6,307 Israelis were injured in the conflict between 2008 and September 19, 2023. The highest number of injuries occurred in 2014, with 2,708 casualties.
Of the total Israeli casualties, the majority were civilians (4,735), followed by soldiers (1,572).
Note: UN-OCHA's count of injuries refers to individuals physically injured in relevant incidents who received medical treatment at clinics or hospitals, or from paramedics at the scene.
Casualties also include those treated for respiratory distress due to tear gas. However, individuals treated for psychological shock are not included.
