Warning! Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Afternoon (Thursday, August 28, 2025)

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday (August 28, 2025) at 12:28 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 3 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached 500 meters above the peak or 1,587 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to grey with thick intensity towards the east. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing when this report was made.

According to MAGMA Indonesia''s volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on August 28, 2025, at 00.00-23.59 WIT showed 4 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 6-7 millimeters and earthquake durations of 38.49-63.84 seconds.

Then, 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 6 millimeters s-p 23.94 seconds and an earthquake duration of 83.25 seconds, and 1 continuous tremor earthquake with an amplitude of 1-4 millimeters, dominant at 2 millimeters.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities, climb, or approach Malupang Warirang Crater within a 4-kilometer radius.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,845 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java erupted the most (2,337 times), while Mount Dukono erupted 488 times.
