Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning (Wednesday, January 7, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Wednesday (7/1/2026) at 05:32 AM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 16 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 800 meters above the peak or 4,476 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to grey with moderate intensity towards the north. Mount Semeru's eruption was still ongoing when this report was made.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on January 7, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 11:59 PM WIB showed 43 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 11-22 millimeters and earthquake durations of 56-145 seconds.

Then, 2 rockfall earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-6 mm and earthquake durations of 47-55 seconds, and 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 9 millimeters and an earthquake duration of 58 seconds occurred.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, the public is advised not to conduct activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for being affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 92 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions, with 53 occurrences.
