Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning (Friday, February 21, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, February 21, 2025, at 07.53 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 70 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,500 meters above the peak (2,825 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 133 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on February 21, 2025, from 00.00 to 06.00 WIT showed 17 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11-28 millimeters and durations of 52-91 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 38 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-13 millimeters and durations of 14-62 seconds, and 7 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-21 millimeters and durations of 72-144 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,438 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (709 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 632 times.
