Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Evening (Friday, October 11, 2024)

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Friday, October 11, 2024, at 4:54 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 25 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,000 meters above the peak or 2,584 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 6.6 millimeters and a duration of 599 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on October 11, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 4.4 millimeters and a duration of 520 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 5 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.2-2.9 millimeters and durations of 124-251 seconds, and 3 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.2-2.9 millimeters and durations of 7-12 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 4,415 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,821 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 772 times.
