Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Evening, Ash Column Reaches 600 Meters Above the Summit

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at 4:58 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 9 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height was approximately 600 meters above the peak or 1,687 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on March 9, 2025, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 140 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 5-33 millimeters and durations of 35.26-66.85 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 8 millimeters, an s-p time of 35.26 seconds, and a duration of 80.3 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 2-7 millimeters, dominant at 3 millimeters.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 4-kilometer radius.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,014 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (942 times), while Mount Dukono erupted 25 times.
