Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Monday, April 21, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday, April 21, 2025, at 10:35 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 28 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 500 meters above the peak (1,825 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 65 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on April 21, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIT showed 22 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 18-28 millimeters and durations of 34-73 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 36 emission quakes with amplitudes of 2-19 millimeters and durations of 17-70 seconds, and 3 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-24 millimeters and durations of 55-161 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,108 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,369 eruptions), while Mount Ibu erupted 1,182 times.
