Lewotobi Laki-laki Volcano Erupts Tuesday Morning; Alert Level Raised

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday (July 9, 2024) at 09:13 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 11 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 900 meters above the peak (2,484 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 19.9 millimeters and a duration of 347 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on July 9, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA showed 2 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 23.6-43.6 millimeters and durations of 171-250 seconds.

Then, 1 rockfall quake with an amplitude of 5.1 mm and a duration of 39 seconds, and 12 shallow volcanic quakes with amplitudes of 3.7-10.5 millimeters and durations of 7-11 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the North-Northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the Northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,536 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (679 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 325 times.
